Yesterday, I took my passport and crossed the border into Yorkshire to visit the 12th century ruins of the Cistercian Fountain's Abbey, 2 miles west of Ripon, 15 miles north of Harrogate. Set in the Skell Valley, this site is a World Heritage Site and apart from the abbey ruins, there's an Elizabethan house, medieval deer park, and a Georgian water garden complete with neo-classical statues. There's also the last surviving Cistercian corn mill in the country.
