My sewing machine, my faithful Husqi 1, is gone for attention. Neither light comes on any more when I switch on and I'd put up with it, using a small table lamp at the rear of the work so I could see to sew. Then the reverse button died. I said a couple of naughty words (Fouaithe!) and worked around the problem. After all, I only need to sew backwards when applying a binding. In fact, most of the quilty things you've seen recently were made under the twin handicaps of no lights and no reverse. Yesterday, I decided that enough was enough and rang the shop. And that's the pixie in the potion.

Several months ago I made a mistake in knitting my second sock and it has languished in my knitting bag ever since. I knew I had several rounds to unknit; a horrid task, and I put it off, and off.

On xmas eve, though, new temptations arrived in the form of Colinette Jitterbug

and I determined that the lingering sock had to be brought to an honourable a wearable conclusion. Between cooking like a house elf the last few days, I unknitted the wrong rounds and am now shaping the instep. With a bit of luck, I shall have new socks for the first of January. :)

I mentioned in my last post that I'd found a knot in my Blue Frog sock yarn. Well, I've just wound off a few grammes to get me back to the same point and dgiâtre! if I didn't encounter another knot and abrupt colour change!

Tchi dgiâbl'ye?!

But I wanted my socks to match, as nearly as possible. Bum.

Another 'finished object'. :) And the giftee liketh! :D

The scarf is longer than this (there's a fair bit out of sight over the recipient’s back) but this gives a general impression.
Yarn: Rowan Biggy print.
Beads: Mill Hill Pebble in black. (05081)

By which I mean things I'm making. Other than a mess. :P

Last night I managed to stay awake (Hee!) and finished the first Blue Frog sock. It could have done with being a few rounds longer in the foot but it's not disastrous enough that I want to pull it back. I also managed to sew some more of the green table runner. It really ought to have a name, that poor project. :)

I got out some of my other books, in particular, this one on Hardanger embroidery. Inside, I found directions for, wait for it, a Hardanger photo frame. Just the very thing! Perhaps my subconscious had remembered that and was prompting me to pick the book up! :D With that one was my bargello book. I now have final ideas on each gift and am able to draw up a shopping list. Top of the list: black beads, to finish the Goth!scarf scarf.

I wonder how the owl will manage a roll of canvas? :P

I've reached the bit where you start the toe shaping. I hope it's long enough. I managed to try the sock on last night -- still on the needles -- (wonder I didn't do myself a mischief!) and I think it might be. I don't want to pull it back if it isn't. I had to do that last time and it gave me heaps of trouble because I had no idea where to replace my markers. I will if I have to, though.

Ah ça!

14 years ago I fell in love with this Maggie Whiting design and spent ages working out my own colourway, which I duly ordered.

Sorting through my stash, I found this project again. (blushes) I had completed 4 octagons. I decided to have at it once again (although I have three projects 'on the needle') and went for a square; reasonably quick. You start with 8 stitches arranged on 4 needles and knit with the 5th.

I reached this point

only with many sharp intakes of breath and much perseverence! (and I can knit socks!)

This is what it looks like off the needles.

Browsing the new pattern books online last evening, I found another that I fancy knitting for myself. (knits for others are already ordered)

Ch'est ch’tî-chîn.

I like the design but the yarn does nothing for me. I'd prefer something tweedy, more interesting so I'm off to compare the tensions of other yarns, and wish, eune aut' fais, that there was a well-stocked yarn shop within striking distance.

Knitting

I came home from the weekly shop with a new knitting magazine; Knitting. There were several new designs or tasters for Autumn/Winter knits that interested me, eliciting several 'oohs' and little squeaks of delight.

I also ordered two more balls of sock yarn. My first pair of socks is coming along nicely and I've rather got the hang of them now. :-) (pic spam will occur upon completion!) I'm fancying a pair for myself.

Then I was salivating over a new Colinette jumper knitted in Iona. Until I worked out the yarn would set me back £81 approx. Hmm, I'll ponder that.

My book on circular knitting has arrived and looks promising. I've been watching The X Men on Youtube. Some of the dialogue is so cheesy you could spread it on oatcakes and eat it but it's surprisingly addictive.

Also found the first five minutes of another comic book creation converted to screen: Constantine. 'Hell wants him. Heaven won't take him. Earth needs him.' Nic is impressed. ;-)

And now, back to the housework.

At breakfast my L upper 5 gave up and fell out. I rather think I'm in for a crown to replace it. I had ham and mushroom tagliatelli for lunch and am feeling sleepy and sniffly as a result.

Attempted a tension swatch on circ needles of the Louisa Harding 'glisten'. I must be doing something wrong because knitting every round gives me exactly that; garter stitch. I'm going to hunt for more information.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of the July issue of the Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist. I had no idea it was still going --haven't seen it since dad died. Some fabulous stuff inside --made my fingers itch.

The rain blew way and the sun came out for the afternoon. I knitted one ball of Rowan 'biggy print' in Goth red/black as a scarf start. It looks okay but it'll need another one. At least. At nearly £7 a ball it won't be cheap. Also got some extra needles and a circular. Now I'm wondering how to do a tension square on circ needles.

I had a go at the squares for the blankie and it looks good, about 4" square. I'm fancying a cushion cover in an assortment of luxury yarns.

À la préchaine!
