Stripes are...

The faded green and white awnings
Outside old-fashioned green grocers
Where the fruit is bright and ripe.

The umbrellas protruding from tables
Outside beach cafés
Where colourful ice-cream
or beer brands shout out
Printed on the plain panels.

The railings outside a church
When you coast past
And they all merge into one line
And are suddenly gone.

The grey clouds that mask the sky
Beyond my window that
Move and change like a child’s mind
Over unimportant arguments.

The light from shuttered windows
First thing in the morning
Falling on cool pillows
And dark hair, flowing in elegant wisps
Away from the blur of out-of-focus.
